Shipbuilding & Marine Laser Cleaning Solutions
The rise of major global powers has always been rooted in shipbuilding and maritime dominance. As a key indicator of national industrial strength, the shipbuilding industry—often called the “crown of comprehensive industry”—has strong spillover effects and drives growth across many sectors. In the first half of this year, global shipping capacity shortages pushed freight rates upward, while rising demand fueled a surge in new vessel orders, creating a “once-in-a-decade boom” in the shipbuilding industry. China’s shipbuilding sector has also seen robust growth, with positive prospects for ship construction, repair, and shipping operations.
Shipbuilding and repair involve extensive cleaning work, including:
- Steel plate pretreatment (before and after welding) and block pretreatment (before coating) for new vessels;
- Rust removal, full paint stripping, and repainting for maintenance and repair of older ships.
Common rust removal methods include manual, mechanical, and chemical techniques. Laser cleaning, as an emerging technology, is set to gain wider adoption.
- Manual Rust Removal
Using tools such as hammers, scrapers, steel knives, and wire brushes. Thick rust is first hammered loose and then scraped off. This method is labor-intensive and inefficient. - Mechanical Rust Removal
Includes pneumatic/electric tools, shot blasting (sandblasting), high-pressure water-abrasive blasting, and wheel blasting. These methods vary in efficiency but often involve heavy equipment and environmental concerns. - Chemical Rust Removal
Based on acid-metal oxide reactions (acid pickling), this method is restricted to workshop operations. It poses high safety risks, causes severe environmental pollution, and is subject to usage restrictions. - Laser Rust Removal
Laser cleaning is a new, green, efficient, and safe technology that is rapidly replacing traditional methods. It plays an irreplaceable role in paint stripping, oil removal, rust elimination in corners and edges, and oxide layer removal.
Laser cleaning offers numerous advantages: no substrate damage, precise control, and energy efficiency. It fully meets the rust removal and pre-/post-welding treatment needs for all types of steel plates and profiles. For vessel maintenance and repair, laser cleaning—as a high-precision technology—is ideal for removing rust and paint from surfaces in cargo holds, ballast tanks, fuel tanks, and other areas. It also effectively cleans carbon deposits on cylinder valves of marine diesel engines. Laser cleaning causes no damage to the base material, easily reaches tight gaps for precision cleaning, delivers high-quality results, and is both energy-saving and environmentally friendly.
