Railway Track Laser Cleaning Solutions

Laser processing technology has found broad applications in rail transit manufacturing, including welding, cutting, surface modification, marking, drilling, and micromachining. In recent years, laser cleaning has also emerged as a popular application in this sector.

Railway tracks are laid in open environments and are exposed to rain, sunlight, and other weather conditions, making them prone to rust and surface contamination. Heavy rust and grime on the rail surface and inner side can cause poor electrical conductivity in track circuits, interfering with signal transmission and compromising train safety. Currently, two main methods are used to remove rust and dirt from in-service tracks:

  • Manual grinding– This is the primary maintenance approach, but it is labor-intensive, difficult to perform, inefficient, prone to damaging the rail, and delivers inconsistent cleaning quality.
  • Large rail grinding machines– These are heavy, high-power units that require their own generators and must be towed by locomotives. Operation requires advance transportation planning and occupies track space, disrupting train schedules. Additionally, they are costly and have a significant environmental impact on the surrounding area.

Laser cleaning offers a fundamentally new approach compared to traditional methods. Its green, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly characteristics have drawn increasing attention, giving it great potential in the rail transit industry. Laser cleaning equipment enables single-operator use, features low cleaning costs, is eco-friendly and efficient, delivers high-quality results, and causes no damage to the rail substrate. It requires no railway transport scheduling, and operation can be performed easily by hand-towing or via remote-controlled automation. These distinct advantages position laser cleaning as a highly promising solution.

Shanghai Shengtong Intelligent Laser Equipment Group, with over a decade of experience in laser cleaning, has collaborated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and research institutions to develop and manufacture a full range of laser cleaning systems—from 50 watts to several kilowatts. Their equipment is widely used in rail transit applications, including wheelset cleaning, brake beam cleaning, track cleaning, and more.
