Aerospace Parts Laser Cleaning Solutions
In the aviation industry, safety takes precedence over everything else. Every process improvement—whether in manufacturing or maintenance—is driven first by safety, not cost.
Aluminum alloys are widely used in critical aerospace components such as skin panels, propellers, fuel tanks, and landing gear struts. Aluminum-copper alloys, known for their high strength, heat resistance, and good machinability, are primarily used for large aircraft skin structures. When exposed to air, aluminum naturally forms an uneven and discontinuous oxide film on its surface. This film must be thoroughly removed before repainting or welding; otherwise, coating adhesion and weld quality will be compromised.
Currently, rolled aluminum parts are typically cleaned with a mixture of chromic, sulfuric, and hydrofluoric acids to remove oxide layers, while die-cast parts are mainly treated with nitric acid. However, these chemical methods require manual intervention, generate environmental pollution, and often fail to deliver consistent cleaning quality.
Laser cleaning has emerged as a leading cleaning technology due to its wide applicability, precision, and environmental friendliness. It is increasingly used in pre- and post-welding applications and surface coating removal. For aluminum alloy surfaces, laser cleaning proves to be an effective pretreatment method before painting or welding.
A key challenge is removing contaminants without damaging the anodic oxide film on aluminum surfaces. For large-area cleaning, achieving sufficient efficiency is also essential for practical production. Shengtong Intelligent Laser Equipment Group offers a range of laser cleaning systems suitable for various aerospace applications, with models available to meet different customer requirements.
Unlike conventional cleaning processes, laser cleaning represents a completely new approach to industrial cleaning. It is an eco-friendly, green technology that works effectively on most aerospace aluminum alloy materials and components prior to welding. It efficiently removes rust, oil, films, oxide scales, paint, and other contaminants without damaging the substrate. Additional advantages include zero pollution, no consumables, selective precision cleaning, and high cleanliness levels.
