Cultural Heritage Restoration Laser Cleaning Solutions

In the field of cultural heritage conservation, the demand for increasingly precise cleaning technologies is growing—technologies that offer high selectivity while minimizing any impact on the original structure of artworks.

Laser cleaning provides a solution to this challenge by offering operators a new tool that can be integrated with existing physical and chemical methods. As a result, laser technology meets the growing demand for adaptable conservation techniques, driven by new regulations and increased use by public institutions. Thanks to ongoing research, the range of applications for different materials continues to expand. The use of lasers on stone surfaces of monuments and historical buildings has now been validated by industry and is widely accepted as a proven restoration process.

Laser cleaning of historical artifacts and artworks offers four key advantages:

  1. Minimally Invasive
There is no physical contact between the laser equipment and the surface being treated. This allows operation on extremely fragile or chemically sensitive surfaces, even before consolidation. Additionally, since the laser acts directly on the surface, no binding agents or chemical additives are required.
  2. High Controllability
The removal of deteriorated layers can be precisely measured—a single pulse typically removes only a few micrometers of thickness, enabling extremely accurate control over cleaning depth.
  3. Selectivity
Laser cleaning takes advantage of the different light absorption coefficients of various materials based on their color. In most cases, the deteriorated layers to be removed (often dark or black in color) fully absorb the laser light, allowing the cleaning process to occur almost instantaneously. Conversely, the underlying substrate material—usually lighter in tone—largely reflects the incident light, limiting or preventing the laser’s action and thus preserving the original surface.

4. High Precision
The cleaning process only affects the area directly hit by the laser beam, leaving surrounding areas completely unaffected by mechanical or thermal effects. Furthermore, fiber lasers enable cleaning of surfaces with complex structures. The variable-focus handheld laser head offers great operational flexibility and can be used for both large surface areas and extremely fine details.
